How a root barrier works
Rhizomes travel outward through the top layer of soil. A barrier gives them something they cannot get through, so they are deflected along it and upward — which is exactly where you want them, because that is where you can see them.
2. Depth is the other half. The membrane has to extend below the level the rhizomes are travelling at, with margin. Anything that passes under the bottom edge has not been contained at all.
Illustrative and not to scale. The right depth for your garden depends on your soil and the species you have, which is one of the things a survey establishes.
What a proper specification looks like
Material. Purpose-made high-density polyethylene root barrier, commonly 0.75–1mm thick. Not landscape fabric, not weed membrane, and not offcuts of damp-proof course — a woody rhizome tip will find its way through or around all three. Get the material named on the quotation.
Depth. Below the level the rhizomes are running at, with margin. For a running bamboo in ordinary garden soil that usually means 60–100cm. A barrier that is deep enough for most of a run and shallow for two metres of it has failed for the whole run.
The top edge. Left standing 5–8cm above soil level, and angled slightly away from the bamboo. This is the detail people ask to have “tidied up” and it is the one that must not be. A rhizome trying to climb over a proud edge is visible; one climbing over a buried edge is not, and you find out two seasons later.
Joints. Overlaps are the classic weak point. Sheets should be properly joined — taped, clamped or welded to the manufacturer's spec — not simply lapped and backfilled.
The ends. Ask what happens where the barrier meets a wall, a fence post, or simply the end of the run. An unterminated end is an open gate, and rhizomes will go round it.
The 6 questions to ask any installer
None are trick questions, and any competent installer will answer all six without hesitating. A vague answer to the first two is the one to worry about.
- ✓How deep are you going, and why that depth? Expect a reason based on your soil and your species, not a standard figure.
- ✓How much will stand above ground? A few centimetres proud is correct. Anyone promising to bury it flush for neatness is describing a barrier that will fail.
- ✓What material and thickness? Purpose-made HDPE, named on the quote.
- ✓How are joints and ends handled? Both are where rhizomes get past.
- ✓What about rhizome already past the line? It has to be dug out on your side, and that should be in the quote — otherwise you are fencing in a problem that is now on the wrong side of the fence.
- ✓What guarantee is offered, and on what exactly? Membrane, workmanship, or regrowth? For how long? There is no industry-standard product for bamboo work, so read the terms and get them in writing.
The visible top edge exists so you can walk the line once or twice a year and cut anything trying to get over it. That takes a couple of minutes and it is the difference between a barrier that works for decades and one that quietly stops working.
If you would rather never think about it again, removal is the honest recommendation rather than containment.

How deep should a bamboo root barrier be?
Deep enough to get below the rhizomes with margin, which for a running bamboo in ordinary garden soil generally means 60–100cm. The rhizome network itself usually sits in the top 20–50cm, so that gives a working margin below it.
Soil type matters: loose, light soil lets rhizomes travel deeper and further, so it wants the deeper end. This is one of the things a survey establishes, and it is why a quote quoting one standard depth for every garden deserves a question.
Can I install a root barrier myself?
People do, and on a short straight run in easy soil it is achievable. Be clear about what you are taking on: a continuous trench to full depth along the whole line with no shallow sections, properly handled joints, sound detailing where it meets walls or posts, and the escaped rhizomes on your side dug out as well.
DIY barriers rarely fail because of the membrane. They fail because a run stopped short at one end, a joint was lapped rather than sealed, or the depth was fine for most of the line and shallow for two metres of it. A rhizome only needs the one gap.
Will a barrier stop bamboo that's already spread?
It stops it going further and does nothing about what is already past the line. Those rhizomes are on your side of the barrier with their own energy reserves, and they will keep sending up shoots, so they have to be dug out as part of the same job.
This is the commonest gap between what people expect a barrier to do and what it does. If the bamboo is already coming up in several separate places across a garden, there may be no clean line left to contain, and honest advice at that point is excavation rather than a membrane.
Can I put a barrier on my side if it's my neighbour's bamboo?
Yes, and it is often the pragmatic answer when a neighbour will not engage — a barrier along your side of the boundary, on your own land, protecting your garden. You would also need the rhizomes that have already crossed dug out on your side.
It is worth talking to your neighbour first even so, because a barrier on the boundary line works better than one set back from it, and because where encroachment has caused damage the cost may not be yours to carry. How long does a root barrier last?
The membrane itself is inert plastic buried out of sunlight, so the material has a very long life — manufacturers typically talk in decades. It is not the material that ends a barrier's useful life.
What ends it is a rhizome that found a gap, a joint or the end of the run, or climbed over a top edge nobody was checking. Which is why the annual walk along the line matters more than the specification of the plastic.
